Getting Around Dominica

Dominica's transport is road-based and refreshingly low-key. Shared minivans, locally called "buses", are the real network: they run when full, follow the coastal road from Roseau up through Portsmouth, and cost a fraction of a taxi. Rental cars give you the freedom to reach the island's interior trailheads. But prepare for steep, narrow switchbacks and left-hand driving; a small 4×4 is worth the moderate splurge. Taxis are plentiful in Roseau and at hotels, yet unmetered, so agree the fare before you climb in. First-timers should know there's no rail, no rideshare app, and no formal schedule, just flag a van anywhere along the main road and shout your destination. If you're staying outside Roseau, ask your lodging which nearby village is the unofficial "bus stop"; waiting at the roadside in the wrong spot can cost you an hour. Skip the idea of hailing a ride after dark on the southeast coast, service thins out and roads are unlit. From Douglas-Charles Airport, the fastest option is a pre-arranged shuttle or taxi. The drive to Roseau winds for about an hour and climbs over the island's spine. If you're on a tight budget, a shared van sometimes waits outside the terminal. But it only leaves when full and may detour through several villages, fine if you're not in a rush.

Quick Transportation Tips

Rent a 4WD at the airport, most inland roads are unpaved and steep.

Local minivans marked 'H' or 'R' ply fixed routes between Roseau and Portsmouth for a few EC dollars. Just wave and hop aboard. They run all day. Drivers know every pothole. Locals ride them daily. Cheap, cheerful, and fast.

Ferry from Roseau to Guadeloupe departs mid-morning. Buy tickets at the Roseau Ferry Terminal the day before. Queues form early. Bring cash and ID. Boarding starts thirty minutes prior.

Download the "Waitukubuli Taxi" app before arrival. Licensed taxis with set fares cover the island. No haggling. Tap, ride, done. Works offline too.
