Helpful Tips
Rent a 4WD at the airport, most inland roads are unpaved and steep.
Hop aboard the public minivans marked 'Roseau, Portsmouth'. They deliver the fastest cross-island ride. Locals swear by them. Skip the tourist shuttles.
Download the 'Dominica Taxi Association' app. Pre-book licensed cabs in seconds. No haggling, no surprises. The fare is locked.
Tell the minibus driver 'Bath Estate'. That stop sits closest to Trafalgar Falls trailhead. You will shave off extra walking. Count on it.
Common Scams to Avoid
Unlicensed 'airport taxis' at Douglas-Charles Airport often quote inflated flat fares to Roseau or Portsmouth without using the meter or official rate sheet. Use only the clearly marked airport taxi dispatcher desk inside the terminal and ask for drivers to show their official taxi license.
Baggage porters sometimes insist on handling luggage from the carousel to the taxi rank and then demand a high fee, even when travelers did not request help. Politely but firmly decline assistance unless you specifically want it and agree on a small tip in advance.
Currency-exchange hustlers near the arrivals exit offer to change US dollars or euros at poor rates, claiming the airport bank counter is closed. Walk past them to the official bank counter inside the terminal. If it is closed, wait until you reach a bank in town or use an ATM.
